Delft University of Technology / Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) will host the 2021 edition of the Coastal Dynamics Conference. TU Delft is the largest and oldest public technological university in the Netherlands and ranks among the top universities for engineering and technology worldwide. The university was established on 8 January 1842 by King William II of the Netherlands as a Royal Academy for civil servants for the Dutch East Indies. Today, TU Delft has eight faculties and numerous research institutes hosting more than 21,000 students and 2,600 doctoral students in total.
The conference will be organized in close collaboration with the partners of the Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research (NCK). The NCK is a cooperative network of private, governmental and independent research institutes and universities, all working in the field of coastal research. The NCK links the strongest expertise of its partners, forming a true centre of excellence in coastal research in The Netherlands.

Historical context:
The principal global conference on coastal engineering is the International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE). The first ICCE was held in Long Beach, CA, USA in 1950. Although the conferences began with a national focus, the conferences quickly became international in scope. ICCE has been held biannually since 1950, both in Northern America, in Europe, in Australia and in Asia, only interrupted in 2020 due to the Covid-19 virus outbreak.
While the ICCE serviced the rather broad coastal engineering society with due attention to practice, there appeared a niche for more coastal sciences oriented conferences, of a lesser size and with a more focus. This initiated the Coastal Sediments conference series, firmly based on the early 80s Coastal Research Programs in the USA. In the early 90s of the last century the EU Coastal Research Programs were established, which triggered the Coastal Dynamics conference series for similar reasons. Both these conferences avoided the even years in which ICCE was organized and decided to alternate in the odd years since 1997.
